Exploring How White-Faced Sakis Control Digital Visual Enrichment Systems

Computer-enabled screen systems containing visual elements have long been employed with captive primates for assessing preference, reactions and husbandry reasons. These typically play enrichment to without them choosing trigger the system their consent. Yet, what videos primates, especially monkeys, would prefer watch of own volition how design computers methods that allow choice is an open question. In this study, we designed tested, over several weeks, facilitates white-faced saki monkeys different stimuli in regular zoo habitat while automatically logging recording interaction. By analysing data, show sakis triggered underwater worm forest, abstract art, animal videos, a control condition no-stimuli. We also note used device significantly less when playing compared other conditions. plotting data time revealed engagement bell curve suggesting confounding factors novelty habituation. As such, it unknown if or usage caused changes interactions time. Looking at sakis’ behaviours working personnel, noted conditions resulted decreasing scratching behaviour. For research community, study builds on animals environment highlighting problems quantifying computer devices.
